Located in Fulham's new Market Halls, Calcutta Canteen is Chef Asma Khan homage to Indian street food.
Chef Asma Khan, of Soho's Darjeeling Express, pays homage to the city of her birth, Kolkata, formerly Calcutta. The canteen culture of Calcutta is special. It's where an entire afternoon could be spent in "Adda"- a Bengali word which has no equivalent English word-- but essentially an extended conversation session and relaxation with friends - usually over cups of tea and the occasional snack!
Market Hall Fulham Broadway is a bright and airy space with 10 kitchens and a bar. The space has been refurbished after being abandoned, now brought back to life.

serious street food
In Kolkata's (formerly Calcutta), the street food preparation and service is taken quite seriously. The experienced cooks are not bothered or distracted by the chaos of the city or the mayhem of motorists. Their focus is unshaken and rightly so; The mantra is that if their food is not perfect, you will not come back. The competition of food vendors is that intense. Many of whom are the breadwinners of their lower income families.
Calcutta Canteen draws from the dedication of these inspiring street food makers. We tell their and Calcutta's stories through this street food cuisine.
